Jason Hovatter/AMO1 LIVE at "The Fixin' To" Portland, Or. 10-18-23
a short set of field recordings from all around north Portland presented live utilizing a custom built 10.2 surround sound multichannel system... MEANING... in addition to the house P.A. i set up 4 individual sets of speakers + 2 sub woofers around the perimeter of the venue. Each channel (speaker) had a different sound source feeding it creating a unique immersive sound field within which the audience can perceive, for instance, a group of sand hill cranes fly in from a distance, into and through the listening space and land off to one side at some distance...
The recordings i used weren't limited to the sounds of wildlife but also many of north Portland's more hidden sounds like elektromagnetic signals from transmission and cell towers, a live feed via shortwave radio from the PDX air traffic control tower, seismic vibrations and junkyard percussion and a few monologue samples from my all time favorite film....
Though its difficult to see here i brought along and played an instrument i build earlier this year called a Slenthem... its a Balinese gamelan instrument with 7 tuned bronze keys/plates similar to a xylophone...
it's great fun to be playing live shows again... lots more to come!
OH! i should also say... this is not actually the live recording from the night of the show (tho its nearly identical)... this is a 2 channel stereo recording from practice the day before. I didn't properly record the show and not really 100% sure how i'd even approach doing it with soo many sound sources... maybe time to invest in an ambisonic mic !?
